It’s a relatively simple trading method used by both professionals and beginners. During the pre-market opening phase, one or more stop entries are placed in the market. These are then triggered and traded when a breakout occurs at the market open.

With this strategy, trading is done on the 1-minute chart. The open range — also called the opening range — is defined, and the goal is to trade a breakout from this range after the official market open. The strategy can be applied to numerous markets such as equity indices (DAX, EuroStoxx, Dow, S&P 500, etc.), bonds (Bund futures, etc.), commodities (WTI, Brent oil, etc.), precious metals (gold, etc.), as well as individual stocks. There are many different approaches to defining the open-range time window. For the DAX, some traders choose the high and low between 09:00 and 10:00, while others recommend 08:00–09:00, 08:00–09:15, or 09:00–09:45. Many traders prefer a DAX range from 08:01 to 09:00, since large jumps can occur at exactly 08:00, so they wait one more minute.

For the Dow or S&P 500, the first 45 minutes after the market opens are often recommended as the open-range window, typically 15:30 to 16:15. But every trader has their own approach here as well.
