The Open Range Breakout strategy became popular in the 1980s. The trader Toby Crabel’s book “Day Trading With Short Term Price Patterns and Opening Range Breakout” is probably the best-known work on this strategy.

It’s a fairly simple trading approach used by both professionals and beginners. One or more stop entries are placed in the market during the pre-market opening phase. These are then triggered on the breakout when the market opens.

With this strategy, trading is done on the 1-minute chart. The Open Range, also called the opening range, is defined, and a breakout after the official market open from this range is traded. This strategy can be applied to numerous markets such as stock indices (DAX, EuroStoxx, Dow, S&P 500, etc.), forex, bonds (Bund future, etc.), commodities (WTI, Brent oil, etc.), precious metals (gold, etc.), and even individual stocks.

There are many different approaches to defining the time window of the open range. While some DAX traders choose the high and low between 09:00 and 10:00, others recommend, for example, 08:00–09:00, 08:00–09:15, or 09:00–09:45. Many traders prefer the DAX range from 08:01–09:00 because there can be large jumps exactly at 08:00, so they wait one extra minute.

For the Dow or S&P 500, the first 45 minutes after the exchange opens are recommended for the open range—usually 15:30 to 16:15. But again, every trader has their own approach.
